Packaging and compliance

EU PPWR: why packaging now starts with product design

Packaging choices increasingly affect compliance, cost and future market access, long before a product reaches the shelf.

Packaging used to come up near the end of sourcing. The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, a more consistent framework with more attention on recyclability, material use, labelling and unnecessary packaging, moves it earlier. The obligations apply in phases, and the detail depends on the product and packaging type, but the direction is clear.

Laminates, decorative coatings, inserts, adhesives and mixed materials look minor in a quotation but affect recyclability and documentation. Cutting material can also change carton strength or pallet efficiency. So a one-line compliance confirmation is not enough. Define the packaging structure, request material information, keep the evidence in the product file and compare alternatives before artwork and tooling are locked.

Regulatory suitability, transport protection and cost per delivered unit belong in one decision. A cheaper box that increases damage is not cheaper.
